Unmanaged New York

These black-and-white photographs capture New York before it was cleaned up and managed. Times Square beyond 42nd Street, subway tokens and platforms, nights at places like the Limelight and the Tunnel, the hum around CBGB, and the in-between spaces people drifted through without much of a plan. A city that rewarded curiosity, tolerated chaos, and hadn’t yet decided who it was for. This is that New York, as it worked.
